Aesthetic
Orthodontic treatment can improve the appearance of
your teeth in several ways. It is well known that braces can
align crowded and overlapped teeth, and close gaps between the
teeth. Braces can also correct the position of front teeth that
stick out too much or are too long, improving a smile that reveals
too much of the upper gums. When you feel unattractive because
of crooked teeth, you may become self-conscious and preoccupied
with your appearance. Patients often feel more self-confident
even before treatment is completed.

Better
hygiene
Because it is easier to thoroughly clean teeth that
are not crowded, orthodontic treatment can reduce the occurrence
of tooth decay and gum disease.

Health of
the gums
Teeth that are out of position can cause gum recession
or inflammation, which if uncorrected, could lead to loss
of teeth.

Temporomandibular
function
Disorders of the jaw joint and muscles can cause
face and neck pain, locking, joint clicking and chronic headaches.
These disorders are sometimes caused by a problem with the
bite. Orthodontic correction may be a necessary part of treating
these problems.

Enamel wear
As you age, some wearing of the enamel of the teeth
is normal. Certain bite misalignments, however, can cause
excessive force on the teeth resulting in fracture and extensive
wear-through of the enamel. Your dentist can repair some
of this damage with crowns, bridges and implants. Orthodontic
treatment, if performed early, may prevent the damage. If
damage has already occurred, sometimes the bite needs to
be corrected before your dentist can repair the teeth.
