Is Your Orthodontist Board Certified?

ABO Certified Orthodontist Dr. Tingey

Did you know only 30% of orthodontists are board certified?!

What does board certified mean? An orthodontist who is not board certified has only met the minimum requirements to obtain an Idaho state license.

Board certification is a way for orthodontists to go above and beyond the minimum requirements by rigorously testing the clinical ability and knowledge of the doctor.

The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) is the only certifying organization for orthodontists that is recognized by the American Dental Association.

To become an ABO-certified orthodontist, a dentist must:

  • Complete graduate program in dentistry, becoming a DMD
  • Complete residency at accredited orthodontic program, which takes 2-3 years
  • Complete hundreds of hours of additional training & education in specialized ortho treatments
  • Demonstrate skill, knowledge, and judgment in orthodontic care
  • Continuing education and renewal of certifications every 10 years

Orthodontics is more than just straightening teeth.
